On Thursday, 7/28/16, Joseph R. Heckman, Ph.D., will discuss ‘Parallels in the Raw Milk and Organic Agriculture Movements’, at the United Steelworkers Hall, Bethlehem. It is the featured presentation at the Summer meeting of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of The Weston A. Price Foundation. Doors open at 6:30pm. The presentation begins at 7. About the Presentation
In recent decades a diverse community of dairy farmers, consumers and nutrition advocates has campaigned to secure and expand the right for individuals to produce, sell and consume fresh unpasteurized milk, commonly referred to as “raw milk”. Their efforts to increase public access to raw milk share important parallels with the emergence of the organic food movement over the past century. Both the raw milk and organic food movements originated with farmers and consumers who sought to replace industrialized food production and processing practices with more traditional ones. Both movements equate the preservation of natural integrity in farming and food handling with more wholesome, nutritious food and environmental conservation. Advocates for both movements have had to work diligently to overcome perceptions that the food production and processing practices they endorse are relevant in the modern era, notably with regard to organic agriculture’s productivity and the safety of raw milk. Finally, the raw milk movement has the potential to economically benefit family farmers much as organic agriculture has proven capable of doing.
About Dr. Heckman
Joseph Heckman, Ph.D., is a Professor of Soil Science, Rutgers University, where he teaches courses in Soil Fertility, Organic Crop Production, and Agroecology. He conducts research and extension programs on optimizing nutrition and soil quality in support of plant, animal, and human health. Dr. Heckman has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of American Society of Horticulture Science. He has served as chair of several professional organizations including Council on History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Soil Science, Committee on Organic and Sustainable Agriculture, Organic Management Systems Community of the American Society Agronomy, and as President of the Northeast Branch of the Crops, Soils, and Agronomy Tri-Societies. In 2012, Dr. Heckman organized and hosted a symposium on Silicon Nutrient Management for the Soil Science Society American Meetings. Dr. Heckman was the lead author of a book chapter on Soil Fertility in Organic Farming for Tri-Society book entitled Ecology of Organic farming Systems. He has published several articles in Wise Traditions. He most recently co-authored a book on Fresh Milk Production, The Cow Edition.
